Building Geron Way Waste Transfer Station

July 8, 2026

Since September 2025, our contractors McLaughlin & Harvey, has been building the new Geron Way Waste Transfer Station on behalf of Barnet Council.

The Geron Way Waste Transfer Station is part of a wider package of infrastructure improvements being delivered through the Brent Cross Cricklewood programme. Once complete, it will provide a modern waste and recycling transfer for the North London Waste Authority, who manage waste for seven North London boroughs, but principally Barnet and Camden.

Almost a year on from the start of construction, significant progress has been made, with the facility on track for completion by the end of 2027. As shown in the images below, the construction of the retaining walls around the site boundary is now complete. These walls help hold back the surrounding ground and create a safe, stable area for the waste transfer station.

Over the coming months, construction will continue with concrete works, and installation of the steel framework that will support the roof. You can keep up to date with the site progress by reading the work schedule here.

Alongside construction, McLaughlin & Harvey’s Social Value team continues to engage with and support the local community. In recent months, the team has partnered with final-year students at Middlesex University on a project aimed at exploring how excess pallets from the construction site could be repurposed into useful community assets. The initiative gave students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with a real client while developing sustainable solutions that could benefit local communities.

Reflecting on the project, Business Student Ayanne Oliveria said: “It was a pleasure presenting our poster and discussing the project with McLaughlin & Harvey. We truly appreciate the opportunity to work on this consultancy project and are very grateful for the support and engagement from the team throughout the process.”

The social value team also welcomed ten young people from BELS (Barnet Education and Learning Service) for a site visit with the aim of promoting careers in construction. One of the young participants is now set to join them on placement at the project.

As part of Careers Month at St James Catholic High School, McLaughlin & Harvey’s Social Value team delivered presentations and STEM activities to inspire students to explore careers in construction and learn about M&E skills. Deputy Headteacher, Mark Pinder, said: “This is a key moment for the school, as our Year 10 students go out on work experience, helping them discover the various options available”.

These are just some examples of how the team is supporting the local community and promoting career opportunities. If you are interested in learning more about apprenticeships and placements with McLaughlin & Harvey, click here.

Each quarter, McLaughlin & Harvey shares a community newsletter which has all the latest updates on construction works, community initiatives and upcoming opportunities. Printed copies are delivered to local residents and businesses, and the newsletter is also available online – see the latest June issue, here.
