As part of the works to build Brent Cross West station, which opened in December 2023, we needed to relocate the Hendon Waste Transfer Station. Works included reconfiguring the railway tracks and building new sidings.

Operations ceased at Hendon Waste Transfer Station on 31 March 2021, and the site was handed back to Barnet Council on 13 December 2021. Since then, waste operations have been undertaken at a temporary facility in Wembley.

Within the outline planning permission for the wider Brent Cross Cricklewood programme, we achieved approval to build a permanent new Waste Transfer Station to accept household waste, street sweepings, recycling and food waste from the seven North London Waste Authority boroughs, but principally Barnet and Camden.

It is anticipated that the new centre planned for Geron Way / Edgware Road, NW2, will handle up to 195,000 tonnes of black bag, mixed recycling, food and street cleaning waste each year.

Plans have put sustainability at the heart of the design of the new waste facility, with a ‘brown roof’ providing a haven for local wildlife and supporting local biodiversity such as bumblebees and the Black Redstart. To minimise impact on residents it will have state-of-the-art odour control technology and there will also be green screening to improve air quality.
