Discover Barnet’s New Art Trail

September 6, 2024

We’re delighted that Brent Cross West jumped on board Barnet Council’s new public art trail ‘Barnet Legends’, which celebrates people from the past who have contributed to the borough’s unique  culture.

This art trail consists of beautiful handmade artworks which can be found at 21 locations across the borough for locals and visitors to enjoy. Each individual  artworks celebrate the achievement of an inspirational person from across industries such as art, film, literature, music, design and aviation.

One of the locations of these artworks is our very own Brent Cross West station (find it on the western side of the overbridge), as well as the Royal Airforce Museum, Barnet Museum, Finchley Youth Centre and many others.

The plaque at Brent Cross West celebrates the famous  activist, Muriel Matters, who was remembered for her bravery in advocating for women’s rights in London during the 20th century. To bring attention and promote the suffrage cause, Matters boarded an aircraft from West Hendon which had a ‘Vote for Women’ sign and dropped leaflets across the city.

Barnet Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Arts & Sports, and Cricklewood Ward Member, Councillor Anne Clarke, commented: “I’ve always known Barnet has an amazing cultural legacy stretching back many, many years. But the Barnet Legends project has taught me we have even more to be proud of than I could ever have imagined. Please explore this trail. Be proud of what people have achieved in this borough in the past – and the great accomplishments people in Barnet will continue to make in the future.”

Each artwork reflects the creativity and diversity of our borough and local community. A huge thank you to the Barnet residents and local organisations who participated in selecting the historical figures and took part in panel sessions. This project was curated by Create London and the artworks were designed by artist and architect Edward Crooks.
