Works start on new Waste Transfer Station

November 24, 2025

Works are underway to build a new modern waste transfer facility on Geron Way / A5 Edgware Road. McLaughlin & Harvey, working on behalf of Barnet Council, are now on site to deliver the construction programme for the waste transfer station which is due to open by the end of 2027.

The Geron Way Waste Transfer Station is part of a wider package of infrastructure works being undertaken by Barnet Council as part of the Brent Cross Cricklewood programme, one of Europe’s most significant redevelopment schemes. It will provide a new modern facility for managing waste and recycling across Barnet and six other North London boroughs.

In 2023, Barnet Council completed the delivery of Brent Cross West – the first mainline station to be built in London in over a decade and one of the first rail projects in England to be delivered entirely by a local authority. For it to be possible to build the station it was necessary to relocate the Hendon Waste Transfer Station on Brent Terrace and following a public consultation, Geron Way was identified as an appropriate site for this.

The designs have been carefully considered and will introduce state-of-the-art odour control technology, as well as brown roofs and screening to enhance biodiversity in the area. Local residents and businesses have been carefully considered as part of the design process to ensure there is little disruption to anyone living close by.

Councillor Alan Schneiderman, Barnet Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change and Cricklewood Ward Member, said: “This new Waste Transfer Station will provide important waste and recycling services for Barnet and other boroughs across North London, while playing an important role in facilitating the wider transformation of the area. The contemporary design will ensure we meet the highest sustainability standards, enhance biodiversity, and include modern design features that control both noise and odour.”

Construction works programme

Construction works will take place between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am and 1pm on Saturdays. No works will be carried out outside of these hours unless prior notice has been agreed by the local planning authority.

The programme of construction has been carefully designed to minimise impact on residents as much as possible. McLaughlin & Harvey has written to residents and businesses in the area with details of the construction activities currently taking place on site and will issue a regular newsletter providing progress updates, as well as information about future jobs, skills and training opportunities.
