Youth in Construction: Brent Cross Town

June 26, 2025

Earlier this month, a group of twelve inspired young people from across Barnet were welcomed to Brent Cross Town for a careers event. They had the opportunity to meet with leading construction contractors and explore pathways into the industry.

The joint event was organised by Brent Cross Town and Barnet Council, in partnership with BELS (Barnet Education Learning Service) and marked the launch of a new programme called BuildUp. This programme is open to young people in Barnet who face additional barriers to employment and education, including young people leaving the care system, those with experience in the youth justice system, and individuals taking part in supported internships designed to help them transition into the workforce. BuildUp aims to inspire and connect them with valuable career opportunities in construction.

Following an informative presentation, attendees were placed into small groups to network and rotate between the various contractors. This interactive format allowed the participants to learn more about each of the contractors, the roles they offer, their company values, and how to get started in the sector.

Leading construction companies such as BAM and St George were amongst the contractors who engaged with the young participants, and offered valuable advice on their apprenticeships, training routes, and entry-level opportunities.

The event was successful, with young people feeling inspired, asking questions and following up with the contractors.

One of the young attendees, Louis McGuiness, said: “Talking to the contractors gave me so much information into the different roles and career paths in construction. I had no idea the Brent Cross development was so massive! Everyone was really welcoming, which made me even more excited about starting my placement – especially now that I’ve received my CSCS card.”

Social Sustainability Manager at BAM, June Wilkinson, added: “This was a well organised event with candidates who had an interest in a career in construction. Following a presentation about Brent Cross Town from the developers, Related Argent, students rotated through several contractors. The students were well informed and asked good questions. One candidate starts on site next week for his two-week placement and we are looking forward to welcoming more in the coming months”.

This event is part of Brent Cross Town’s vision to unlock work opportunities and is also one of the ways the Brent Cross Cricklewood regeneration programme will continue to offer opportunities to local people from a range of backgrounds and through different routes.
